"I'm going to love you as much as I can"
Our collective culture often tells us that PDA’s — Public Displays of Affection — make Others uncomfortable and ought to be avoided. And there is a solid reason, it seems to me, to avoid pushing intimate, personal moments into public spaces.
I did recently, however, have a dear client tell me about having the person they were dating return home from a weekend trip and my patient reported having tears of relief and joy and happiness spring to their eyes. Someone in the vicinity, I’m sure trying to be very socially acceptable and clever, said something like, ““You better settle down, you two aren’t even engaged.”
I love what my client told me about this … “I was so angry about that. I told [my significant other] later …. “I’m going to love you as much as I can love!”
The anger and love and self trust in my client’s reaction moves me and I wanted to be true to that by sharing it.
